R&D Test Engineering Intern

Job Description

Type: Part-Time Student Internship / Engineering Project
Duration: ~10 weeks
Location: HKUST Laboratories & Hong Kong Science Park (HKSTP)

About the Role

Quano Technologies is a deep-tech startup developing high-precision nanopositioning systems for advanced scientific research.

Nanopositioners are devices that move samples or instruments by extremely small distances — down to the nanometer scale. They are used in areas such as nanotechnology, cryogenic research, ultra-high vacuum (UHV), microscopy, optics, quantum research, and precision instrumentation.

We are looking for a technically capable engineering student to support a hands-on R&D reliability-testing project involving our nanopositioning systems.

You will work with Quano engineers across HKUST research laboratories and Hong Kong Science Park, gaining exposure to real deep-tech hardware, precision engineering, and advanced research environments.

What You Will Work On

Your work may include:

  • Developing and improving testing and automation code

  • Working with nanopositioning stages and motion-control systems

  • Preparing and monitoring reliability tests

  • Recording measurements, errors, and test results

  • Evaluating mechanical fixtures and suggesting improvements

  • Troubleshooting software, hardware, and mechanical issues

  • Organizing engineering data and documentation

You will work with existing Quano stages, controllers, fixtures, and testing requirements. The goal is to improve and validate the testing system, not build everything from scratch.

Who We Are Looking For

 Students in fields such as:

  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Mechatronics / Robotics

  • Electrical / Electronic Engineering

  • Computer Engineering

  • Applied Physics

  • Precision Engineering / Automation

Useful experience includes:

  • Programming or automation

  • Robotics or motion control

  • CAD / mechanical design

  • Sensors and instrumentation

  • Laboratory or research work

  • Engineering testing

  • Hardware-software integration

We are looking for someone with a solid engineering foundation who enjoys working with real hardware, solving technical problems, and working with reasonable independence.

Why Join Quano?

This project gives you exposure to technologies that are rarely encountered in typical student internships:

  • Nanotechnology and precision motion

  • Cryogenic and UHV environments

  • Piezoelectric motion systems

  • Deep-tech product development

  • Reliability engineering

  • Hardware-software integration

  • Hands-on R&D

You will also see how advanced scientific technology is developed, tested, and validated inside a deep-tech startup environment.

Depending on project needs and performance, there may also be opportunities for continued part-time engineering work with Quano.
